Analysis: Verizon's VoIP patents drop dime on need for reform

Mainstream press coverage of the patent dispute between Verizon and Vonage routinely describe Vonage as having used Verizon's "patented technology." A closer look at the patents reveals that Verizon isn't claiming a "technology" in the ordinary sense of the word, but a legal monopoly on a broad category of VoIP functionality.
